Nana Akufo-Addo’s campaign has received another major boost from a former Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Mustapha Ali Idris who has described him as “the best bet for the Party in the 2012 general elections.” He said this during the team's tour to the Northern Region as part of Nana Addo's campaign to win the August 7 primary of the NPP and thus become the party’s flagbearer for the 2012 general elections. “Nana Akufo-Addo is the only hope the NPP has to wrestle political power from the ruling NDC in the upcoming 2012 general election,” he said. Alhaji Mustapha Idris, whose comments attracted persistent applause from the party’s delegates in the Tolon constituency where Nana Akufo-Addo and his Victory 2012 campaign team visited, appealed to the delegates to vote massively for Nana Akufo-Addo on August 7 because the party wants power back. The former Works and Housing Minister noted that the next election is a sure win for Nana Akufo-Addo because “he has already been marketed across the length and breadth of Ghana and everybody in Ghana today knows the name, Nana Akufo-Addo, and travelling around the Northern region with him and looking back at how he was received when he entered our region a few days ago, it is obvious that his popularity keeps rising each passing day.” Alhaji Idris also noted that “President Mills and his NDC government are making life unbearable for Ghanaians and it is obvious that in 2012 Ghanaians will change them. We as NPP people have to be wise and vote for a candidate who came closest to candidate Mills in the last general elections, because he is the one who is closest to the power than anybody else.” The former Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister observed that “former President Kufuor was asked in 1996 to go and come back by the Ghanaian electorate and he came back in 2000 to win the power for the NPP. President Mills was asked to go, go, and come before finally being voted for as president in 2008. If you vote for any candidate other than Nana Akufo-Addo, Ghanaians will tell him to go and come back and that will mean power in 2016, but as you all know, we want the power in 2012 and the man to win us the power in 2012 is Nana Akufo-Addo.” He noted that Nana Akufo-Addo’s 49.8% performance in the 2008 elections makes him an asset for the party and if he is put up again for the next general elections he will win massively for the NPP. He remarked that Nana Akufo-Addo is a threat to the NDC and hence their incessant attempt to try and promote a candidate other than Nana Akufo-Addo. “I want to send a message to the NDC, that whether they like it or not, Akufo-Addo is the man we will bring to face them in 2012 and given how badly they are performing and also how popular Nana Akufo-Addo is in Ghana today, I am confident that he will win the 2012 general elections.” Amidst spontaneous shouts of Nana no size, Nana you are the best for us, the NPP stalwart concluded by appealing to the delegates to consider Nana Akufo-Addo’s excellent performance during the NPP administration under Former President Kufuor and explained that he is a respected diplomat, accomplished legal luminary, a known human rights activist and strong party man whom has risen through the ranks to become one of the most experienced and respected politicians in Ghana. “Nana Akufo-Addo has served the NPP from its formation as a founding member, National Executive, Parliamentarian, a Cabinet Minister, and finally flag bearer, and so I appeal to you one more time to vote massively for him come August 7”, he remarked as he sat down to loud chants and claps from the delegates. Nana Akufo-Addo’s tour of the Northern region has not been without the usual endorsements that the campaign received in other regions. Mr. Charles Bintim, former MP for Saboba, who had already endorsed Nana Akufo-Addo as the best man for the NPP, has since been reiterating his position on various platforms in the Northern region. Some senior members of the NPP and Members of Parliament who hail from the Northern Region have all endorsed Nana Akufo-Addo and have been touring the region with the Victory 2012 Campaign Team. They include Malik Alhassan Yakubu, former MP for Yendi, Alhaji M. N. D Jawula, one time GFA President, Alhaji Amadu Kaleem, founding father of the NPP in the Northern region, Rita Tani Iddi, MP for Gushegu, John Jabbah Bennam, MP for Zabzugu, Kofi Adda, MP for Navrongo Central and all former DCE ‘s and MCE’s have endorsed Nana Akufo-Addo as the best candidate for the NPP in the 2012 general elections and have been appealing to delegates to vote massively for him come August 7.
