What could best be described as an epic political jamboree greeted Akuse in the Lower Manya-Krobo constituency, when Member of Parliament for the area announced his presence at a keep fit programme organized by some party faithful of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and sympathizers of the MP, who is contesting the December polls as an independent candidate.
The exercise formed part of strategies adopted by Michael Teye-Nyaunu and his team to woo floating voters and disenchanted NDC party sympathizers who have picked bones with the party in recent times, to their fold.
Michael Teye Nyanu, who is popularly known as ‘MTN’ was defeated by the deputy eastern regional minister, Ebenezer Okletey Teye Larbi in a keenly contested primary. The MP has since vowed to prove his party wrong, hence his decision to run as an independent candidate.
The supporters who came out of their respective residences to catch a glimpse of the arrival of Mr. Nyaunu, could not hide their joy when they trooped in their numbers to join him as they jogged from the Akuse Police check point to Amedeka, a nearby town.
Teye Nyaunu, who is known in Ghanaian politics as the ‘Political Maradona’, exhibited one of his dribbling skills as his words of encouragement sent the crowd yelling.
Hawkers, especially ‘Aboloo’ sellers on the streets of the Kpong main lorry station, waved cheerfully at the MP and his entourage as they passed by.
They chanted the MP’S slogan, “People’s choice, all the way to victory’’.
The MP told journalists in an interview that “they were thinking I will be unable to fight back. Now they find it difficult to campaign here. When you are dealing with MTN you must be careful”.
The Lower Manya-Krobo seat has virtually become a ‘bona fide’ property of the NDC since the year 1992. Teye-Nyaunu in 1996 defeated the former PNDC secretary for the eastern region, Major Ted Tetteh (rtd), to become the MP for the area.
But Mr.Teye-Nyaunu’s decision to contest as an independent parliamentary candidate has brought about the debate of whether the NDC could win the seat this time round.
The parliamentary contest in the Lower Manya-Krobo constituency promises to be competitive this time round.
Dedo Dufie-Kusi of the NPP, Ebenezer Teye Larbi of the NDC and incumbent Michael Teye-Nyaunu are those contesting the seat come December,7th this year.
