The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has assured voters in Akwatia of its commitment to a peaceful by-election on September 2 but has cautioned that it will not hesitate to defend its members if provoked.
Deputy General Secretary of the party, Mustapha Gbande, stressed that the NDC has no intention of inciting violence, yet it will firmly resist any attempts to intimidate or attack its supporters.
“Violence will not be part of this election, but just in case anybody foments violence, we will not watch for members to be victims,” he said while addressing supporters on the campaign trail on Wednesday, August 27.
Mr Gbande later clarified his comments in an interview with Citi FM, noting that the party’s stance is defensive rather than confrontational.
“At no point will the NDC encourage any of our supporters to engage in violence. We will defend and protect every single member of the NDC who participates in this election. We will protect the vote – that is what my statement means,” he explained.
He further urged the security agencies to remain vigilant and ensure a level playing field, warning that the NDC will not tolerate intimidation.
According to him, the party’s priority is to secure a credible election that reflects the will of the people of Akwatia.
