From the December 7, 2008 elections, Dr Asare polled 16,889 from 83 out of 89 polling stations while Baba Jamal had 13,810 votes.
Mr Samuel Agyei of the Convention People’s Party had 109 votes, with the two Independent candidates, Mr Basil Ahiable and Mr Samuel Abrokwah polling 1,835 and 64 votes respectively.
The rerun became necessary in the Akwatia Constituency following the inconclusive election of a member of parliament during the December 7, 2008 election.
The process was truncated when unidentified persons stormed some of the polling centres to steal ballot boxes.
