New Patriotic Party (NPP) flag bearer aspirant, Alan Kyerematen, has been given perhaps the highest ratings in terms of his capability to lead the opposition party to victory in the 2012 elections.
Spokespersons for Mr Kyerematen, Yaw Boabeng Asamoah, says his boss is the only candidate who can inspire hope into the teeming youth of the NPP and turn the country around.
In an interview with Joy News on Thursday, Mr Boabeng Asamoah, who is a former aide to ex-vice president Aliu Mahama, declared that even his job with Alan is a “privilege” to work with a result-oriented person.
“I now exercise the privilege of working with somebody who I believe is the only one since independence who has delivered a conceptual framework for creating employment and jobs in this country through the PSI,” he told Joy FM’s Midday News hosted by Dzifa Bampoe on Thursday.
Explaining his decision to support Mr Kyerematen and not the former vice president, Mr Boabeng Asamoah said for now, “the tables have turned” and that although Mr Aliu was a good candidate whilst the NPP was in power, the party currently needs a person who can best appeal to Ghanaians; and Mr Kyerematen perfectly fits the bill.
Walkabout
Alan is currently combing the Greater Accra region in search of support ahead of the party’s race for a presidential candidate in August.
This is his second attempt at securing the mandate of the party to contest for election as president.
Mr. Kyerematen and his team have so far been received well in many constituencies but constituency executives in Ablekuma South are opposing a scheduled visit to the area. That is because some polling station executives claim they have been sidelined.
One of the executives, Abu Saddique, warns Mr Kyerematen’s campaign would be met with stiff opposition.
Respecting the law
Mr Kyerematen is not likely to go to Ablekuma as earlier scheduled. According to his spokesperson, Boabeng Asamoah, the decision not to visit the constituency is to respect legal processes ongoing to settle internal party wrangling there.
He said the resistance in Ablekuma is only “a tiny storm in a tiny team cup.”
“I want to assure Ablekuma that Mr Kyerematen has their interest at heart and that nobody will be left out in this process. And that when they are properly constituted and ready he will come back to them wherever he has met Greater Accra and will meet all of them at the right time,” he said.
“As long as there is a court problem, we will not incur any problem with the judicial process and in any event we need to speak to delegates who are recognized by the party constitution.”
Early congress
Mr Kyerematen’s camp has also played down suggestions that he opposed the early congress that was scheduled for July 3 - the date has been shifted to August 3, 2010.
Mr Boabeng Asamoah tells Joy News that under no circumstance would Alan have opposed the date, rather he was concerned that the party might not be able to properly organize a congress of that size within the stated period.
“Our concern was whether the party itself will be in a position to organize itself in time, given the constraints as to the processes and logistics and administration of an election which is entirely new to the party. As for the candidate, you are compelled to compete within the limits of the time given to you by the party.”
For now, Alan’s strategy is to reach as many, if not all, delegates in the electoral college as possible within the time frame the party offers, Mr Boabeng Asamoah said.
On rumours the congress date has been changed to give room for Mr Kyerematen’s eligibility for the position to be tested, Mr Boabeng Asamoah said it would be ridiculous for any individual to embark on such an endeavour.
Mr Kyerematen reportedly failed to “officially” return to the party after resigning over some misunderstandings two years ago.
