The Member of Parliament (MP) for Mpraeso has asked the government to allocate portions of the Sanitation Levy to the yet to be passed National Hydrogeological Authority as part of its sources of funding.
Davis Ansah Opoku said this will enable the Authority help curb the issues of flooding in Accra.
The NPP MP made the plea when he contributed to a statement on flooding in the capital city by the Korle-Klottey MP, Zanetor Agyeman Rawlings on Thursday, June 2.
The Deputy Ranking Member on the Public Account Committee insisted this must be done urgently.
“Mr. Speaker, I am calling on the government to as a matter of urgency consider allocating some portions of the Sanitation Levy into the Hydro Authority because they need money to function and also construct new drains. When this happens, we will have an authority that we can hold accountable when flooding occurs in the country.“

Mr. Ansah Opoku also asked Parliament to quickly pass the Hydrological Bill currently before the Works and Housing Committee of the House.
"Mr. Speaker, one of the government’s initiatives that is before the Works and Housing Committee, is the Hydrological Bill. I strongly believe that if we are to fast-track the passage of the bill in that the Hydrological Authority will be established and funds allocated to them, I am sure that they will be able to resolve most of these challenges."
Meanwhile, the government says it has already spent GH₵450 million to curtail the flooding menace.
A revelation some Ghanaians have expressed their dissatisfaction with.
However, President Akufo-Addo, speaking at the commissioning of an IHC BEAVER 50 dredging and marine equipment at Adjei Kojo, claimed that the GH₵450 million his government invested in curbing flooding in the country has reduced the impact of the menace in the country.
“I did raise concerns at the beginning of my address about the flooding situation in Accra. The government, since 2017 has spent some 450million cedis on the flood control programme which has resulted in the reduced incidence of flooding in the major flood-prone areas in Accra.”
