Out of the about 6,000 taxis, only 3,000 have been registered by Sikkens in an embossment exercise it is implementing in collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) but the latter says it would not extend the Wednesday deadline for the exercise.
Sikkens requested for the extension of the deadline when the Accra Mayor Mr Stanley Agyiri Blankson visited the premises where the exercise is being undertaken.
According to the Marketing and Sales Manager of Sikkens, Mr George Debrah, the extension was required to enable the company emboss the over 2,000 taxi cabs in the capital city.
The embossment exercise is expected to make for easy identification of taxi drivers as well as reduce robbery cases involving taxi cabs in the city.
Mr. Debrah said although his company has employed more workers to increase the number of cars it embosses in a day, it will not be able to complete the exercise.
But Mr. Agyiri Blankson said the exercise would not be extended again. The embossment exercise has been extended twice already.
He said all registered taxi operators who were unable to have their taxis embossed by the end of Wednesday would be given special permits to work with.
On Tuesday afternoon when the Mayor visited the Sikkens premises many taxi cabs were in a long queue waiting for their cars to be embossed.
Mr. Agyiri Blankson warned all unregistered taxi operators to register at the AMA head office or park their cars at home.
