People of Ngleshie Amanfro, in the Ga South Municipality, will soon have access to an elevated health facility in their locality to ease the challenges they face in accessing health care.

A sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a General Hospital has been held with the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Joseph Nyami, and the chiefs and people of the community attending.

The first phase of the project which includes a 50-capacity bed female ward, estimated to cost GHS 400.000, will be completed in four months.

This project will be followed by the construction of a theatre to be completed in December this year.

The project when completed will have an accident trauma and intensive care units to augment the capacity of the Winneba Accident Trauma Centre to handle accident emergencies on the Kasoa Mankessim road.

The Amanfro health facility was a community clinic but was later transformed to a polyclinic. However, because the Ngleshie Amanfro shares a boundary with Central Region it routinely records an overwhelming influx of patients, thus putting huge pressure on the hospital.

After the sod-cutting ceremony, the MCE cut and held  a similar event at Tebu for the construction of a three-unit classroom block and teachers’ common room to enhance teaching and learning in the municipality.

Speaking after the ceremony the Municipal Chief Executive Joseph Nyami said health and education are some of his major priorities. He said he will work hard to meet the health needs of the people in the municipality.

He said upgrading Amanfro Polyclinic to a modern district hospital status has been his ambition since he assumed of office as an MCE.

According to him health and education dominate his development agenda for the municipality and for that he introduced an environmental sanitation program in which free dustbin will be distributed to residents as part of various interventions to make his municipality the cleanest district in Greater Accra.

The MCE hinted that the assembly has many projects planned for the Amanfro community but access to land has become a problem.

 He appealed to the chiefs and landowners to release lands to enable the assembly to undertake its intended projects.

The Senior Medical officer in charge of the hospital, Dr. Akosua Ayisi commended the MCE for the project which, according to her, will enhance health care delivery for people especially women.

She said currently the hospital is managing an estimated 5000 pregnancy cases annually.

The medical officer said although the first half of 2018 just ended, the hospital has already referred 800 patients to various hospitals in Accra. She expressed concern about the huge traffic jams on the Kasoa-Accra road that makes emergency referrals dangerous. 

On his part the chief of Ngleshi Amanfro, Nii Kwashie Gborlor said his palace will closely monitor the progress of the projects to make sure they are completed on schedule.

He appealed to the MCE to include chiefs in the decision-making process since they are stakeholders of development in the community.
