General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has described as "ridiculous and inept" an ex-parte motion filed by Mr. Benoni Amekudzi challenging the hearing of the Election Petition by the Supreme Court Thursday.
Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie said the pitiful performance put up by lawyer Amekudzi in court was intended to disrupt proceedings.
Lawyer Amekudzi who stormed the court by an amicus curiae brief or a friend of a court claimed the ongoing hearing is in violation of the 1992 Constitution.
But counsel for both petitioners and respondents unanimously objected to the motion arguing that it lacked merit.
Presiding Judge William Atuguba ruled that motion was not properly laid and was in gross violation of Article 64 of the 1992 Constitution which gives the right to people aggrieved by election results to proceed to court.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Thursday, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie said Benoni Amekudzi was just a nuisance in court.
According to him, it was very intriguing and sad to see a learned colleague displaying his ignorance of the law just to satisfy his "political pay masters".
Sir John as he popularly called stated that his [Amekudzi's] motion was dead on arrival because the NPP is suing John Mahama as candidate of the 2012 general elections not as president.
The NPP scribe said the demeanor of the lawyer in court suggested that he [Amekudzi] was a confused man.
"Amekudzi was acting like a thief who has lost his way to a house he is going rob; I felt so sorry for him".
This notwithstanding, he said Amekudzi through his theatrics managed to gain some publicity in the media.
Sir John confessed that the lawyer’s ambush brought some comic relief which he claimed helped ease the tension and stress in court.
