Mining firm, AngloGold Ashanti has denied a newspaper report that claimed the company has sacked 5,300 workers and is set to shut down its Obuasi mine on November 14, 2014.
According to the mining giant, early this year, it submitted its Amended Programme of Mining Operations (APMO) which seeks to address challenges facing the Obuasi mine to government and regulatory agencies in compliance with the country's laws.
"The proposed amendment includes undertaking downsizing operations to ensure sustainability. This involves some level of retrenchment of staff. Feasibility studies will also be undertaken. In connection with this, discussions are currently on going with Government and regulatory agencies". the firm explained in a press statement that sought to rebut the Daily Graphic publication on November 6.
AngloGold Ashanti says it is in constant dialogue with its workers and the Obuasi community to ensure that actions it will take to address its operational challenges are informed by their input and in the best interest of all stakeholders.
"We wish to assure all stakeholders that any decision on the APMO concluded with Government on the future of the Obuasi mine will be promptly shared with them. The company requests the media to exercise restraint in putting out stories with no factual basis on the ongoing process", the company said in the press statement.
