The AngloGold Ashanti has expressed regret about the death of an illegal miner at its Obuasi underground mine on Wednesday 2 September, 2009.
“The deceased was discovered near the Adansi Shaft on 24 level, some 2,400m underground.
“The body has since been recovered and delivered to the Arthur Cade Hospital on the mine,” a company’s press statement on Thursday noted.
It said the company has notified the Obuasi Municipal Police Service and the Mines Department for investigation.
“We also wish to assure the public and our employees that this is the only incident on the mine involving illegal miners on Wednesday 2 September.
“Reports of several illegal miners being trapped and rescue teams being dispatched are simply incorrect.”
