After the emergence of a Ga group which strongly advocated for the removal of former President John Agyekum Kufuor from his private office in Accra, another pressure group of the same tribe has emerged, this time to fight for their lands which have been allegedly sold to other tribes in the country. The group - Ga Independent Movement (GIM) - which aims at ensuring development on Ga lands and protection of Gas' properties, has categorically stated that Gas have always been cheated in terms of development and academically. The group said almost all the lands belonging to them as a region have been sold to other people from other tribes in the country. They said recently when the former President John Agyekum Kufuor named the Accra Sports Stadium after an Akan person, they petitioned the former President to take off that name and instead name the place after a Ga legend but nothing happened. They continued that in terms of education, Ga natives have been forced to study other regional languages, even in their own native lands."We the Gas have no peace even in our own region ... our cemeteries have been sold to people from other tribes to build on ... when you go to all the developed places, like Cantonments, Labone and East Legon, you can only see people from other tribes there”At a durbar held in Teshie, a suburb of Accra, the President of the group, Obile Amarh, who spoke with the people and the media on phone from Australia and the organiser Henry Otoo, accused the Chiefs, Elders, opinion leaders and Ga natives for the underdevelopment and the sale of all Ga lands. They stated that if the elders have the Ga people at heart, they would not have sold the lands and taken the generation after them into consideration, adding, "we will blame them for our downfall".They, therefore, advised the leaders to ensure that Gas have their freedom.Source: Observer
