A 25 year old man was gunned down at Asante Atwima Agogo in latest case of gangster killing to be recorded in the country.
Eyewitnesses said the group of gunned men ambushed the man, Richard Marfo, near a drinking spot at about 7:30 a.m. yesterday and ordered him to raise his hands.
They said when Marfo (popularly known in the area as Roger) obliged, one of the gangsters gunned him down and they all disappeared.
It is the second such killing in the area since February 18, this year when a young man, Nana Kwame, was shot under similar circumstances.
Angered by the bullet-riddled body of the victim which remained at the scene till late morning, the youth of the town, who imputed chieftaincy motives of the murder, targeted the chief of the town, Nana Okyere Poku, for revenge and set ablaze two houses with links to the palace. One of the burnt houses was said to have been built by the chief for his mother.
As the youth sang and chanted war songs, neighbours and relatives of the deceased wailed for the callous way in which the murder was carried out.
In the ensuing commotion, the only school in the town was ordered to close down and the children sent home.
As pockets of mourners gathered to discuss the incident and anger mounted against Nana Okyere Poku, the Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, ACP Seth Oteng said that the chief had been invited for questioning since his name had been linked to the killing.
He said claims had been made to the effect that the chief had lately been hiring some macho men to harass some youth in the town who were opposed to his reign and that the citizens had linked the present murder to that chieftaincy tension in the town.
He added that the names of some other suspects had been given to the police, who were investigating to effect the necessary arrests.
In the February incident, Nana Kwame, a royal of the town, was said to be standing in front of the chief's palace when he was shot and killed. Eyewitnesses said the gunshot came from the palace but the killer has still not been identified.
