One person was killed in the early hours of Thursday and another sustained serious injuries on his throat, when a taxi cab they were travelling in, was attacked and set ablaze, around Widana, near Bawku.
The victims were on their way from Bawku to Sankasi, in Togo, when the incident occurred on PusigaZong-Natinga road, between the hours of 6 and 8 a.m.
MustaphaAIi, alias Kokonsa, the driver of the taxi cab, was shot dead, and his body burnt, while the second victim, Osman Issaka, a petty trader, and an occupant of the taxi cab, had his throat slashed.
While the body of Kokonsa has been deposited at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, Issaka is receiving treatment in the same hospital, in critical condition. The two, married with children, are said to be Moshis.
Mr. Victor Agbetornyo, Upper East Regional Crime Officer of the Ghana Police Service, confirmed the incident, in a telephone interview, and said the police were investigating the circumstances, which led to the latest killing.
Mr. Agbetomyo said the security personnel in the Municipality, had intensified their patrols, to give protection to life and property.
An opinion leader of the Mamprusis, Mohamed Tahiru Nambe, said though the victims were Moshis, their mothers were Mamprusis, and that it would have been difficult for one to identify them as Moshis, and not Mamprusis.
This is because they resided in the Mamprusi settlement.
Meanwhile, our sources at Bawku say, some of the market women were not
spared as they were beaten up, and their monies taken away from them, by the assailants.
When the news got to Bawku, a young man, believed to be a Kusasi, was chased and stoned.
Upon seeing a police officer, his attackers abandoned him, and fled the scene.
There was pandemonium in the Bawku township, as many residents ran for safety, while parents also rushed to schools, to pick up their wards.
Most businesses closed down, and the streets deserted following the incident.
The Bawku Municipality has been a hot spot since new year’s eve when rivaling factions in a protracted chieftaincy dispute escalated into violent confrontation.
