Tragedy struck the Weija Police Saturday when suspected armed robbers ambushed and shot one policeman dead and seriously injured three others.
Lance Corporal Ernest Amoah died instantly when he was shot about 12:30a.m. on Saturday, February 11, 2012, after he and his colleagues had gone to Tuba, near Weija, to arrest an alleged notorious armed robber.
The three others who sustained injuries are Corporal Joseph Engme, Corporal Samuel Owusu and Lance Corporal Prince Okyere.
They are currently on admission at the Police Hospital in Accra.
According to the police, the patrol team had a tip-off that a suspected armed robber, identified as Dawood Tetteh, alias Dada, was hiding in an uncompleted building at Tuba.
Based on that information, the patrol team set off to effect his arrest, but, unknown to the police, members of the robbery gang had laid ambush for them.
The robbers opened fire when the police reached the place where they (robbers) had laid ambush, killing L/Cpl Amoah instantly and causing severe injuries to three others.
The police said one of the suspected armed robbers was also shot at by the police and have, therefore, appealed to the public and all medical centres and facilities around the country to be on the lookout for persons with suspected gunshot wounds.
In a message to the public, the Accra Regional Police Commander, Commissioner of Police (COP) Rose Bio Atinga, assured the public that the police would not be deterred by the “criminal act” but be spurred on to discharge their mandate of providing internal security without fear.
She said the Police Administration would provide a handsome reward to any member of the public who would provide information leading to Dawood’s arrest.
