Sunyani has been invaded by hundreds of security personnel, police armoured cars and Multi-Purpose Vehicles (MPV), in anticipation of any riot, ahead of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential primary slated for Friday, July 8 to 10. So far, four armoured cars and two MPVs, among other fleet of police buses that stormed Sunyani on Wednesday, made a brief display in town to announce their presence in the city and to also indicate that they were poised for action. President John Evans Atta Mills is battling it out on Saturday with Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, the wife of the party founder; and she wants to make history by becoming the first woman presidential candidate. The contest has been described by political pundits as a make or break for the ruling party. The Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Commander, DCOP Robert Ayalingo, in an interview with Daily Guide on Wednesday, said the police was ready for the congress and was prepared to ensure the safety of all delegates, observers, party supporters as well as the general public. According to him, over a 1000 police personnel, alongside over 300 military men would be detailed to provide security in and around Sunyani Coronation Park – the venue for the congress. He however warned that the police would deal mercilessly with any trouble maker, pick-pocket and other miscreants who would like to cause chaos or ply their trade at the congress. DCOP Ayalingo further indicated that only people with accreditation would be allowed to enter the stadium, adding that there would be proper checks at the main entry point. He disclosed that all stands had been fortified with security personnel who would be placed there to ensure the security of the delegates. The police chief said there would be a fan park for party supporters at the Twene Amanfo Secondary/Technical School, for them to enjoy live band music and watch proceedings live from a giant screen. He noted that 40 police personnel and an MPV would be placed at the school to ensure law and order. According to him, the MPV could be used to spray tear gas, sprinkle ice and hot water depending on the situation to disperse people as well as engage those who are armed. He further disclosed that there would be police protection at 38 hotels in Sunyani, 20 at Techiman and 6 at where delegates and party Functionaries would lodge. Source: Daily Guide/Ghana
