A renowned Ghanaian artist based in the US Virgin Islands, Nii Ahene La, last week held a one week seminar for young painters, sculptors, conceptual artists and students at the W.E.B Dubois Memorial Centre in Accra.The seminar dubbed “Meet the Artist”, forms part of a project titled “Creative Perspectives - Promoting Contemporary Art in Ghana”, which is being supported by the European Union through the Cultural Initiatives Support Programme to the tune of GH ¢41,790.00.Topics treated include biological information development, defining your art, artistic philosophy, group and solo exhibitions, style and substance, museums/foreign galleries and artists.Others were writing press releases, protection of artworks through contracts/agreements, local and international copyright laws, on-line presence, website development, marketing strategies, digital photography and pricing of artworks.An award winning artist, Ahene La, is a co-founder of the Society of Caribbean Artists (SOCA) – a regional and international artist’s organization headquartered on St. Croix, capital of the US Virgin Islands.The International Biographical Center in the United Kingdom nominated him in 2001 for the “21st Century Award for Achievement”, in recognition of his “numerous and outstanding contribution to the arts.”In 2003, la Asociacion Profescional de Arte y Folklore in Puerto Rico honored him with a plaque for his professional contribution to the arts, enhancement of African Heritage as well as his work as a cultural anthropologist and a visiting curator.Ahene La is one of the distinguished printmakers in the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop’s history collection at the Library of Congress, Washington, DC.His other public collections can be found at the Museo de las Americas, Viejo San Juan, Puerto Rico, National Museum, Accra, Harlem Collections, New York Hospital Corporation, NYC, and Medgar Evers College of Brooklyn, all in the USA.Source: Daily Guide
