Polls have opened today for election of District Assembly and Unit Committee members across the country.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has said some 57,000 candidates have registered to contest the polls. Out of the figure, 18,519 are vying to become assembly members, while 38,520 want to be in the Unit Committee members.
There are a total of 6,700 electoral areas and each electoral area would be represented by one assembly member.
Police say they have deployed some 48,000 personnel to ensure a smooth run of today’s exercise.
Voting officially started at many polling stations at 7:00 am and will end at 5:00 pm.
