Former Information Minister Stephen Asamoah-Boateng and his wife have reported to the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI). Mr Asamoah Boateng’s voluntary appearance at the BNI follows an attempt by officials of the BNI to arrest his wife earlier Wednesday. The two reportedly entered the BNI compound in the company of their lawyers. Officials of the bureau earlier stormed the residence of the former Information Minister's wife, Mrs Zuleika Asamoah-Boateng, in an apparent attempt to arrest her. Mrs Asamoah-Boateng is alleged to have engaged operatives of the BNI in a scuffle with at the Kotoka International Airport when they attempted to take custody of the passport of her husband. Deputy Information Minister Okudzeto Ablakwa earlier told Joy News Mrs Asamoah-Boateng "obstructed justice," and said her “unruly behaviour” was actionable. Speaking in an interview with Joy News Wednesday, Mrs Asamoah-Boateng said she had been told that three men had visited her mother’s house at Tantra Hill in Accra, to whisk her away. Mr Asamoah-Boateng - together with his wife and children - was prevented from boarding a flight at the airport Sunday evening by BNI operatives – who said the former Information Minister was due to answer questions bordering on a contract that was awarded under his watch some time ago at the ministry. General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Ohene Ntow, has faulted the BNI on their mode of questioning. He said although the party believes in the authority of the bureau to investigate matters relating to the state, the current trend adopted by the security operatives rather smacks of political persecution. More on the list Meanwhile latest information reaching Myjoyonline indicates that former Deputy Foreign Minister, Charles Brempong-Yeboah has also been invited to the BNI to answer questions on the importation of rice from India. Former Foreign Minister, Akwasi Osei-Adjei, and former Deputy High Commissioner to India, Kofi Apratwum, have also been questioned on the same issue. Road blocks on Obama visit The fracas between the BNI and Mr Asamoah-Boateng has torched off massive protest by the youth of Mfantseman West which the former Information Minister represented in the last Parliament. They are threatening mayhem when US president Barrack Obama visits in July. “We will mount road blocks when Obama is headed for Cape Coast,” a an obviously disgruntled youth at Mankessim told Joy News correspondent Richard Kojo Nyarko. Mr Obama is expected to visit the Cape Coast and Elmina Castles to observe some historical relics when he visits.
