Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan missed a glorious opportunity of becoming the first Ghanaian player to win the Caf Player of the Year award in 17 years after losing the crown to Cameroon attacker Samuel Eto’o Fils.
Gyan was expected to pick the award after inspiring the Black Stars to a successful campaign at both the 2010 African Cup of Nations in Angola and the World Cup in South Africa.
The award which is Eto’o’s fourth was decided by votes from the Head Coaches of senior national teams of the 53 National Associations affiliated to Caf.
Despite the disappointment, Asamoah Gyan believes the future is bright.
He said it was encouraging to be recognized and noted he still had many years ahead of him.
Ex-Black Stars player and Board Member of the Professional Players Association of Ghana, Augustine Arhinful believes Eto’o is a deserved winner of the award.
Meanwhile, The Black Stars won the National Team of the Year award, while midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah was named the Young Player of the Year. And, ex-Black Stars coach Milovan Rajevac was handed the Coach of the Year award.
