The daughter of Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has shared personal reflections on the dynamics of royal family life and the importance of cultural connection.
The princess, Dr. Caryn Agyeman Prempeh touched on the topic of marrying within the royal lineage, acknowledging the challenges and benefits associated with such unions.
In a conversation with Lexis Bill on Joy FM's Personality Profile show, she expressed her evolving perspective, highlighting the value of marrying someone familiar with the traditions and customs of the Ashanti Kingdom.
Dr Prempeh says she herself did not use the arranged royal route in choosing her spouse but acknowledged that "ideally yeah, it will make it easier if you went that [royal] route of marrying someone familiar to the Ashanti Kingdom."
"I was a bit resistant, but then I’ve grown to believe that it makes it easier. Because if you marry someone who understands the culture or is familiar with Asanteman and rule, they appreciate you better, they know where you're coming from, and so they respect you better. "
"The further you move away from it, the more difficult it is. But then, before you experience that difficulty, you might think, why should you choose who I end up with for me? But it's for your own good, because that way, the person appreciates where you're coming from."
She added "I would I would want my kids to conform to it. It will make it easier, from my experience."
Reflecting on her own experiences, Dr Prempeh candidly discussed the realities she faced growing up and navigating societal expectations.
She emphasised the importance of understanding one's cultural background and the need for mutual respect and appreciation within relationships.
When asked what message she would convey to her father through the medium, Dr. Prempeh said, "I'm deeply sorry."
