Illegal miners have resumed blasting of rocks at Asare Bediako Senior High School at Akrokerri, exposing students and authorities once again to danger. The explosion sends students running for cover amid fear and panic each time it occurs. The galamsey operators temporarily ceased operations recently when the agitated students petitioned the Adansi North District Assembly and the police over the matter. Three weeks ago, students of Asare Bediako Senior High School in the Ashanti Region marched in protest of the mining activities on their campus. They presented a petition to the Adansi North District Assembly, copied to the Obuasi Police Divisional Command for intervention. The blasting operations have left cracks in walls of newly-constructed buildings funded by the Getfund, whilst students live in fear. Following a Luv Fm exposé on the issue, the blasting appeared to have been suspended. The students however say the situation has gotten worse with more intense explosion. Headmaster, Charles Nuako, puts the blame on the Obuasi Divisional Police Command for its inaction in getting rid of the illegal miners. According to him, the police under the guise of investigating have been dragging their feet and have so far failed to take any action to prevent the miners from using dynamite in their operations. Mr Nuako questions why the Obuasi police command have failed to act on the orders of the Adansi North District Assembly to remove the illegal miners. He refuted allegations he is conniving with the miners in their operations. “In the event that I am complicit in this operation, am I above the law?, why will a headmaster who is engaged in such an act organize students to send petitions to the District Assembly and also write a report to the police on the issue, how do you reconcile that?” he asked. Mr. Nuako regretted that in a country where use of fire crackers are deemed illegal, the police will sit idle whiles people use dynamites to blast rocks on the school compound. The headmaster also rejects explanations from the police that the miners have license to operate. “If the district assembly takes tax from a licensed operator does it mean he cannot abuse his operational limitations?” he queried. Meanwhile, the Obuasi District Crime Commander DSP Kwabena Acheampong tells Luv News investigations are still ongoing. According to him, the police and the Adansi North District Assembly have met with the miners, where they agreed not to use dynamites in their operations. DSP Acheampong denied knowledge of the resumption of blasting activities in spite of the agreement, saying he will dispatch personnel to investigate. The operations of the illegal miners have persisted for over five months now and school buildings constructed with scarce national resources are gradually being destroyed.
