The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has announced that stalled major road projects inherited from the previous administration are set to resume construction, backed by new funding from the 2026 national budget.
In an interview with JoyNews, Dr. Amoakohene confirmed that contractors have now been resourced to return to critical sites, addressing widespread public expectation for the completion of these legacy projects.
He cited the lack of dedicated funding as the primary cause for previous delays, stating that the government now has mechanisms to provide necessary liquidity to contractors.
Key projects highlighted for immediate action include the dual carriageway from the Bekwai roundabout to the Santase roundabout, under contract with China Geo.
The Minister confirmed that funds have been released this month, and the contractor is mobilising to be on site by next week.
Additionally, Phase 2 of the Kumasi-Sunyani road, specifically the damaged section from Abuakwa through to Mankranso, is scheduled for work to begin next week.
Dr. Amoakohene emphasized prioritizing the severely deteriorated stretch from Mukpa to Mankranso to ease commuter discomfort.
"Additional areas coming up for next week are Kumasi-Sunyane Road Phase 2. It starts from Abuakwa all the way to Mankransu. Unfortunately, from Mukpa to Mangkansu has a lot of damaged areas. So, that is also under construction," he said.
The announcement also implicitly covers other notable stalled projects, including the Sewua Regional Hospital road, the Suame Interchange, and the Santase-Anwiankwanta dual carriage road.
Dr. Amoakohene concluded that these developments represent a significant step forward, made possible by the provisions in the 2026 budget, and signal the start of a major construction push in the region.
