The Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has lifted the curfew placed on Old Tafo – a town in the region.

According to the Regional Minister, Alexander Ackon the decision was occasioned by the relative peace order and security in the town.

In February 2016, REGSEC placed a curfew on the Tafo township after factions in the Muslim Community and the traditional authorities clashed over a piece of cemetery land. One person died at the end of the violent clash with dozens sustaining varying degree of injuries.

The curfew was to span from 6:00pm to 6:00am but it was later reviewed to 8:00pm to 4:00am. However, before the end of March the Interior Minister reviewed it again from 11p.m. to 4a.m. following complaints of residents who called for it to be lifted.

Speaking to Joy News, Thursday, Mr.  Ackon said: “Every intelligence report points to the fact that absolute calm has returned to the place”.

Recounting the incident leading to the decision to lift the curfew, the regional minister said the Metro Security Council of Old Tafo had recommended to REGSEC two weeks ago to have the curfew lifted.

REGSEC dropped the recommendation because members said there were some things they need to do before lifting the curfew, he said.

He said when all the conditions required by REGSEC were put in place, members decided it was time for the curfew to be lifted.

Per that decision, all the security forces posted to the township have been withdrawn, he continued.

“We wouldn’t need the visible presence of the security but intelligence report will still be gathered”, he said.
