Business tycoon and Member of Council of State, Alhaji Asuma Banda, has said the only modern politician with semblance of the late Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah is President J.E.A. Mills. According to him, Dr. Nkrumah was selfless and placed Ghana first before any other interest, but those who came after him before Prof. Mills threw that important character to the dogs. Alhaji Banda, who was speaking in an interview with The Enquirer newspaper on the sidebars of the celebration of Dr. Nkrumah’s birthday, which is also the Founder’s Day, said that Dr. Nkrumah was incorruptible to the extent that he never carried money on him. “I know Dr. Nkrumah personally and when he travels with his ministers they usually swerve him when he wanted to give out money because he would eventually fall on his ministers,” he said. He told The Enquirer that Dr. Nkrumah was honest, sincere and true Ghanaian and the best that could be done for him was to keep his legacy. “It is unfortunate that there were attempts in the past to kill Dr. Nkrumah’s legacy until Prof. Mills and his government came into power,” he added. Asked by The Enquirer whether he was not praising Prof. Mills by virtue of being a Member of State, Alhaji Banda said: “Mills is honest and sincere and I will have turned down that offer if I don’t trust him. Mind you, there were similar overtures but I turned them down because I don’t trust those who offered them.” According to him, he would do everything to make the Mills administration to succeed because it has what it takes to develop Ghana. “I want to be emphatic that apart from Mills all those who came after Nkrumah were not honest and sincere,” he said. He told The Enquirer that just like Nkrumah rejected shady deals all in the name of his party, so is Prof. Mills, adding “Mills will never receive kickbacks to finance the NDC.” Alhaji Banda said that Prof. Mills would be more beneficial to Ghana and Africa after serving his eight years in power because he has enormous exemplary qualities under his sleeves.
