Assembly members in the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) have given their full backing and support to the Accra Mayor Alfred Vanderpuye in his bid to implement the laws pertaining to high rise buildings in the capital.

Calls for the resignation or outright dismissal of the AMA head have been rife, following a second building collapse disaster in the capital.

In November 2012, a four-storey Melcom building collapsed killing 14 people and injuring several others.

Only last Thursday, a seven-storey hotel under construction in Nii Boi town in Accra, collapsed killing one person and injuring another.

Many were angered by the Nii Boi town disaster and blamed the city authorities for not taking steps to avert another disaster after the Melcom one.

The calls for the dismissal of the AMA have been rife.

But today, assembly members held a news conference declaring their support for Mr. Vandepuije.

They told Joy News' Michaela Anderson the call for the mayor's resignation is not the solution to the problem.

He said at the Assembly, there are departmental heads responsible for specific duties and must be held responsible for some of these challenges.

So if there is an issue you don't ask for the AMA boss to resign, he noted.

He said the AMA will soon come out with a swift plan of action to deal with some of these challenges.

Joy News has learnt the AMA Chief Executive will soon be leading a taskforce every Friday to inspect high rise buildings in Accra.
