The Association of Ghanaian Solar Industries has raised alarm that the country could be losing out investments in the renewable energy industry as a result of government move to restrict importation and installation of solar equipment.

According to the association, some of its members have relocated to Liberia and other neighboring countries because the Energy Commission has placed a temporary ban on new licenses.

General Secretary, Agyenim Boateng told Joy Business at the Engineering Procurement and Construction meeting by Huawei and Jubaili bros in Accra that certain policy directives to stop businesses from installing solar equipment with prior approval by the Energy Commission is counterproductive.

“As we speak, many of our members have decided to move out of the country with their investments due to these policies on mini grid solar and renewable equipment to neighboring countries like Liberia and other West African countries. We can’t continue like this as a country if we want a sustainable use of energy because this is a matter of concern globally. Also it is likely to push about 700 jobs away from the country” he said.

The association is therefore making an appeal to government to reconsider its decision to save jobs in the industry.

Head of Solar at Jubaili Bros, Sampson Amanya advised businesses to fall on solar and other forms of renewable energy due to the current ongoing climate change policy initiatives and cost of power.

The meeting was aimed at introducing stakeholders to the new trends of products emerging in the industry.
