The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) is set to join the industrial action of their colleagues in public universities starting on Monday, January 29, 2024.
This move is in demand for improved conditions of service.
GAUA said the decision was taken at an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on January 23, 2024.
The Association explained that the decision follows government’s failure to address the problems facing "senior administrators in the public universities enumerated here, and the penchant attitude of government agencies in handling issues affecting staff of the traditional universities."
“The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) hereby activates its advertised intention to declare an indefinite nationwide strike action effective Monday, 29th January, 2024 to drum home its dissatisfaction with the lethargic government attitude in resolving the issues raised and pending before the National Labour Commission NLC.”
Already, the Tertiary Education Workers Union (TEWU) has scheduled a date to join the strike of the Senior Staff Association of public universities.
Chairman of TEWU-Ghana at KNUST, Charles Arthur is advocating negotiation of salaries for university staff to be reverted to the Committee of Vice-Chancellors.
He expressed this during a meeting with workers' unions as part of the "Building Ghana Tour" of the NDC.
In response, John Mahama said there is a need to put all public workers on the same salary structure.
He is calling for the cancellation of Article 71 office holders, emphasising the need for economic stability.
Meanwhile, the former President says the request of a "honeymoon" if successful in a comeback was misunderstood.
