Dressmakers and tailors have been called upon not to encourage their clients to expose parts of their nakedness, as doing so defies rules of the profession. Mr Daniel Setsoafia, National Vice President of the Ghana National Tailors and Dressmakers Association (GNTDA) who made the call, said dressmakers must advice their clients against requesting for designs that are provocative, popularly know as "dress to kill". He said it is appalling to see people especially ladies, wearing dresses that expose their nakedness, and therefore cautioned members of GNTDA to put a stop to designing such clothing in order to maintain their dignity in the industry. Speaking at the graduation ceremony of 45 ladies of the Ashaiman Zone One branch of the association, Mr Setsoafia advised the members to be professionals in providing their services to their clients, as people are identified by their dressing. He called on the Ghana Education Service and other stakeholders not to only concentrate on supporting tertiary students, but should also provide allowances and other support to apprentices, as they also contributed to the economy through the payment of taxes and levies to the district assemblies. Madam Charity Asiedu, Ashaiman Zonal President, noted that the branch has commissioned a total of 793 tailors and dressmakers over the past nine years, as well as opened four zones in the Ashaiman municipality. She appealed to the government, Ashaiman Municipal Assembly and the traditional leaders to support the association with land to be used for the construction of a resource centre, to train more tailors and dressmakers. She said currently an apprentice undergoes three-years of training and writes the association’s examination before graduating, adding that, some of its members obtain additional training at the Tema Technical Institute. Deserving apprentices were presented with sewing machines, irons, plastic chairs, and ironing board among other prizes. In a related development,the Reverend Samuel Budu-Arthur, Minister in charge of Ebenezer Methodist Church at Penkwase in Sunyani Diocese, has urged church goers to lead exemplary lives to help transform undesirable lifestyles especially among the youth. “It is simple to change the life styles of people, especially the youth, if those who attend churches lead exemplary lives”, he said. Preaching at the 8th week-long celebration of the Church’s Youth Fellowship at Penkwase, Rev. Budu-Arthur said “it is very difficult these days to differentiate between Christians and non-Christians in our communities because of their interactions and the way of dressing”. The celebration that brought together youth fellowships of the church at Yawhima, Kotokrom, New-Dormaa, Nkwabeng and Wesley Cathedral, all in Sunyani Diocese, was aimed at raising funds to complete youth projects. It was under the theme, “Moving the Church ahead, the youth as a catalyst”. Rev. Budu-Arthur advised the youth to lead exemplary lives and to actively participate in church activities, stressing that the attitude and behaviour of some youth was a major hindrance to their progress in life. He appealed to the youth to dress decently so others could follow their example and called for love and unity amongst them.
