The African Union (AU) has condemned the recent suicide bombings in Maiduguri, Borno State, northeastern Nigeria on March 16, 2026, which claimed several lives and left many injured.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, AU Commission Chairperson H.E. Mahmoud Youssouf expressed deep sorrow over the attacks and extended condolences to the families of the victims, wishing a speedy recovery for those injured.
“The African Union stands in full solidarity with the Government and people of Nigeria during this difficult time,” the statement read.
Chairperson Youssouf reiterated the AU’s firm rejection of all forms of violence by terrorist groups and extremists, describing such acts as grave violations of human rights that threaten peace and stability in communities.

The Commission commended Nigerian authorities and Borno State officials for their ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and improve security in Maiduguri and surrounding areas.
The tragic incident, the AU noted, highlights the persistent threat posed by terrorism and the need for continued vigilance.
Calling on the international community, the AU urged enhanced support for Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin region, including humanitarian assistance, intelligence-sharing, capacity-building, and investment in initiatives aimed at addressing the root causes of violent extremism.
The AU affirmed the lasting peace can only be achieved through collective security, strengthened cooperation, and sustained commitment, while reaffirming its unwavering support for Nigeria in promoting stability and sustainable peace.
