A man suspected of stealing a motorbike has died after he was brutally assaulted by a mob at Awutu Bawjiase in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region.
According to reports, the suspect and an accomplice allegedly hired an Okada (commercial motorcycle) rider from Esikaso in the Eastern Region under the pretense of travelling to Awutu Bawjiase.
Upon reaching the outskirts of the town, the suspects reportedly attacked the rider with a stick and fled with his motorbike.
However, the victim managed to get assistance from another Okada rider and pursued the suspects.
In an interview with Adom News, the Assembly Member for the Bawjiase-Mankesim Electoral Area, Isaac Amoaquandoh, revealed that the suspects rode the stolen motorbike along the Bawjiase-Okwampa road.
The chase continued until one of the suspects was apprehended by a group of Okada riders in the middle of the road. The second suspect reportedly escaped.
The Assembly Member said the angry riders assaulted the captured suspect and, in the process, mutilated him by severing his testicles.
He was later rescued by officers from the Awutu Bawjiase District Police Command and rushed to the Awutu Bawjiase Polyclinic, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival due to the severity of his injuries.
Meanwhile, the Bawjiase District Police Command has confirmed the incident and says investigations are underway into the lynching and the alleged motorbike theft.
