Fishermen at Axim in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region are calling on President Mills to dismiss the Municipal Chief Executive, Rev. James Ackah Cobbinah for misconducting himself.
The fishermen have accused the MCE of misappropriating funds accrued from the sale of premix fuel. A group called the Concerned Citizens of Axim have also accused the MCE of discriminating against one of the ethic groups of Axim.
The irate fishermen who wore red bands amidst drumming and dancing, ready to hit the streets of Axim succeeded in conveying their message to the media and to the Western Regional Chairman of the NDC, Nana Toku who intervened to calm tensions.
The Chief Fisherman of Apewosika, one of the four fishing communities in Axim, Nana Kojo Pegu disclosed that for nearly two and a half years, the MCE has not allowed the Premix Fuel Committees to render accounts.
He also accused the MCE of taking kickbacks from the sale of every single tanker of premix, and says they could not sit aloof for the illegality to continue particularly when it is mandatory for part of the revenue to be used for development projects in the area.
According to him, whilst some fishing communities had benefited from development projects from proceeds accrued from the sale of premix fuel, fishermen in Axim were yet to witness any development. He said the MCE unilaterally carries out some projects without consulting opinion leaders to know what their needs are.
For instance, residents of the Apewosika community have questioned the shoddy construction of a public toilet facility and a public bathroom which the MCE claims to have been renovated at a cost of 15,000 Ghana Cedis.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Concerned Citizens of Axim, Charles Adjei, says the MCE has virtually concentrated all major development projects amongst the Gwira ethnic area whilst leaving the Evalue ethnic area with nothing.
He also accused him of disrespecting the Paramount Chief of the Lower Axim Traditional Area, Awulae Attibrukusu III. Out of the 42 villages that form the Nzema East Municipality or the Evalue-Gwira Constituency, 29 of them are of the Gwira ethnic group whilst thirteen form the Evalue ethnic group. Mr. Adjei says the MCE was virtually dividing the people along ethnic lines because he is a Gwira.
Organisers of the demonstration say calls for the MCE’s removal deepened after he allegedly supported the election of the NDC’s Parliamentary Candidate for the 2012 elections who is also a Gwira.
The Western Regional Chairman of the NDC Nana Toku says the allegations would be investigated and the appropriate recommendations made to the President. Attempts by Maxx News to speak to the MCE proved futile.
In a telephone conversation the seventy-four year old MCE said he was not prepared to comment on the matter at any time.
