National 100m record holder, Benjamin Azamati, broke the facility record in the prelims of the 100-meter dash running 10.04 at the ongoing NCAA DII Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Allendale, Michigan.
Azamati, who comfortably qualified to the 100m final on Saturday run the third-fastest time in NCAA DII history.
His name appears four times on the special list having run 9.97s, 10.03s, 10.07s and now 10.04s with Darell Green in fifth with 10.08s.
Azamati becomes the first man from West Texas Uni to be named the South Central Track Athlete of the Year after breaking the NCAA Division II records in the 100 and 200-meters.
The former University of Ghana sprint king broke the 100m record at Texas Relays in 9.97 before running 20.13 at the Lone Star Conference Championships in the 200m and was a member of the 4x100-meter relay that ranks second in the United States.
Also at the NCAA DII Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Azamati for the first time in his career, run the anchor leg to push West Texas University’s 4 x 100m relay team to the final for the first time since 2014.
The 2021 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & field Championships are expected to end on the campus of Grand Valley State University with intense competition for trophies.
