Brong Ahafo regional office of Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of Ghana Police recorded more than fifty per cent decrease in non-maintenance cases during the second quarter of the year.
DSP Sampson Agbeko, Regional Coordinator of the Unit disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Sunyani on Monday.
He said cases reported on non-maintenance and assault dropped from 289 and 17 in the first quarter to 125 and 12 respectively in the second quarter of the year while threat of harm increased from one to seven in the second quarter.
DSP Agbeko said the Unit recorded seven, six and five cases for stealing, unlawful removal of a child and abduction in that order, in the second quarter whilst offensive conduct and defilement cases were five and three respectively.
Two cases were recorded each for rape, criminal abortion, fraud and defrauding by false pretence; and causing harm, causing damage, attempting to commit crime and carnal knowledge with a female idiot recorded a case each.
There were no reported cases on child trafficking, child abuse, bigamy, unnatural carnal knowledge, incest, indecent assault, harassment and sodomy during the period under review, DSP Agbeko added.
The Regional Co-ordinator stressed that western culture and lifestyle had negatively impacted on the youth “who now regard marriage as a contract that they can get into and out at will, contrary to the nation’s traditions and culture”.
DSP Agbeko cautioned couples to consider the implication and consequences when deciding to divorce “as it makes the children vulnerable and prone to child delinquency”.
