A 33-year-old woman has been sentenced to three years imprisonment for stealing a 10-month old baby.
Lydia Mensah, also known as Esi Tawiah, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Prosecuting, the Assistant Superintendent of Police Sarah Acquah, told the court that the complainant, Leticia Nkoom, on August 25 went hawking with her baby, and as the baby fell asleep, she left him in the care of Kwesi, 11, whom she normally left the baby with at the spot where she operated at Madina.
ASP Acquah said that a few minutes after the complainant had left, the baby woke up and started crying. Lydia then offered to walk around with the baby but fled with him. She boarded a Togo-bound vehicle at Madina Zongo Junction and left.
When the complainant returned, and did not find the baby she lodged a complaint with the Madina Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit which made radio announcements and the accused was arrested at Aflao with the baby.
