South Africa coach Pitso Mosimane may be reluctant to admit it but 2010 Fifa World Cup quarter finalists Ghana will give Bafana Bafana their toughest test so far this year when the two nations meet in a downgraded training match at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg on Sunday.
Bafana Bafana have drawn in matches against Equatorial Guinea and Zambia — 0-0 and 1-1 respectively — this month, but Mosimane said he did not want to view Ghana any differently from the national team’s recent opponents.
“I do not know if Ghana will be tougher to beat than Zambia,” Mosimane said this week.
“Football is not just about the big names. Sure, Ghana have players who play Champions League football every week.
“But football is 90 minutes and anything is possible.”
Ghana have been based in Rustenburg for the past few days, preparing for the African Nations Cup in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon from January 21.
Coach Goran Stevanovic has included striker Asamoah Gyan in his African Nations Cup-bound squad after deciding that Gyan had made sufficient recovery from his hamstring injury.
Gyan is just one of the constellation of stars who should give Bafana’s depleted line-up a tough day at the office on Sunday.
Stevanovic will have some of the continent’s best players, while Mosimane will attempt to continue defying the odds and ride his luck with a weakened line-up, as he has done since the start of the year.
Mosimane’s squad is essentially a third-string outfit as many of the players in the camp in Rustenburg are inexperienced.
The opportunity to represent their country came about after many domestic and overseas clubs decided against releasing players for the training matches against Zambia and Ghana.
While many observers expected the greenhorns to be overawed by the weight of the national team jersey, the newcomers have grabbed the opportunity and surprised even Mosimane.
The Bafana coach said he had been impressed by what he had seen so far.
Sweden-based May Mahlangu has been a revelation and could be the find of this whole exercise after finally getting his first Bafana cap against Equatorial Guinea last week.
Many other players have risen to the challenge and Mosimane suddenly has options where previously it seemed his options were limited.
Mahlangu has returned to Helsingborg FC as per a prior agreement that he would play only against Equatorial Guinea and Zambia.
Mosimane preferred to look on the bright side, and said he would not allow the continual changes in personnel to detract from his main goal of building a decent side before the start of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers in June.
“Behind every door there is an opportunity. And this (playing the three friendlies this year) has been an opportunity.
“Yes, some might not be happy with the drawn matches but we achieved something here.
“May Mahlangu is going back to Sweden but we will soldier on,” Mosimane said.
“I am happy that we are playing all these teams that have qualified for the African Nations Cup because we have been decent against them.
“We wanted to give the young ones a chance and there is a lot of good that we saw.
“We played a fully fledged Zambia squad with all their big-name players.”
