The 2008 vice presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party arrived in Ghana to a rousing welcome by supporters of the party, Tuesday.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia arrived at the Kotoka International Airport at approximately 8:15 pm on a British Airways flight, Joy News’ Anny Osabutey reported.
Hundreds of supporters clad in party colours were in jubilant mood showering praises on a man they expect to be officially confirmed as vice presidential candidate of the NPP.
Bawumia told Joy News he was happy to be home and thanked the supporters for their support.
He would not answer whether he was in town for the announcement of his selection, maintaining that the party structures mandated to choose a vice-presidential candidate must not be pre-empted.
He returns to the country after sojourns at the University of British Columbia in Canada, Oxford University in England and Zimbabwe as the African Development Banks Country Representative.
Youth Leader of the NPP, Anthony Karbo, told Joy News the nation and party's pulse indicated clearly that Dr Bawumia was the most preferred candidate for the nomination.
Nana Adu-Asare, a well-wisher said “I expect Nana to maintain Bawumia because he has demonstrated over the years that he has the leadership and technical competence that when elected will spur the economic growth and structural transformation of the Ghanaian economy and that informs my support for his candidature.”
Earlier, Pollster Ben Ephson had told Joy News' Dzifa Bampoh the former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana was the NPP's best bet.
He said any mud that could be thrown against him had already and that selecting a different candidate could portend dangerous consequences for the opposition party.
