Nana Akomea, Chairman of the Communications Directorate of the campaign of former Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has dismissed claims by Bryan Acheampong that Dr Bawumia’s candidature was the principal cause of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections.
Speaking on Peace FM on Thursday, December 18, Nana Akomea described Bryan Acheampong’s assertion as a personal conjecture unsupported by any credible research evidence.
Nana Akomea cited several independent research reports conducted ahead of the 2024 elections, including studies by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), Afrobarometer, and Global Info Analytics.
According to him, all these surveys consistently projected an NPP loss based largely on prevailing economic challenges and deteriorating living conditions, commonly described as “bread-and-butter” issues.
He further referenced post-election research conducted in 2025, including the Prof. Mike Ocquaye Committee report and studies by Germany’s Konrad Adenauer Foundation, which he said reached similar conclusions.
These reports, he noted, identified economic hardship and public disaffection with the government as the primary reasons for the party’s defeat.
Nana Akomea stressed that none of the major research findings cited Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s candidature as a contributing factor to the NPP’s loss.
He therefore challenged Bryan Acheampong to produce at least one credible survey or research report to support his claim.
Concluding, Nana Akomea pointed to recent surveys ahead of the NPP’s upcoming primaries, including those by Global Info Analytics and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, which indicate growing support for Dr Bawumia among party delegates.
He argued that this trend further undermines the suggestion that Dr Bawumia was responsible for the party’s 2024 electoral defeat.
