The spokesperson for the 2024 general election campaign of Vice President and leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Miracles Denis Aboagye, has suggested that the Vice President lost the election not for his own actions, and that he's only a "victim of circumstances".
According to Mr Aboagye, people recognize that Dr Bawumia lost because he was a victim of a situation, and not because he was not suitable for leadership. As a result, many have sympathized with the Vice President since last week’s polls.
“One of the things that are quite clear in these conversations is that everybody seems to sympathize with Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as a candidate who is a victim of circumstances,” he said.
Aboagye explained, “It’s as if sins were brought upon him, which he had no control over, at a time when he was pursuing his own mission.”
He added that Dr Bawumia now has a responsibility to reach out to the masses and explain the circumstances surrounding his defeat in the 2024 election.
“He has a responsibility at this point to reach out to these people and say, 'I understand you have punished me for these things, but shall we have a conversation? Shall we talk to see if we can heal these wounds and find a common path forward into the future?”.
Despite the disastrous defeat in Saturday’s polls, Aboagye stated that Dr Bawumia’s qualities remain unquestionable, saying, “His capability, his ability, his level of innovation, and the fact that he is the leader this country needs are not in doubt. But sometimes you can find yourself in the right place at the wrong time" he noted.
“He is essentially being punished for a lot of sins he did not commit,” he emphasized regarding the Vice President's defeat.
Out of a total of 11,191,422 valid votes cast, Dr. Bawumia of the NPP secured 4,657,304 votes, while Mr. John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) garnered 6,328,397 votes, winning by a landslide in last week's election.
Former President John Mahama, now the incoming President, and his team have begun the transition process in preparation for him to take office on January 7, 2025, following the end of the Nana Akufo-Addo and Bawumia-led administration.
