The Volta Regional Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has told Ghanaians that the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is a better option in the debate of who takes over the mantle of leadership of the country.
He said the newly elected flagbearer’s knowledge in economics and information technology, among others, puts him ahead of the National Democratic Congress’ Presidential Candidate, John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking to journalists in Ho during the presidential primary on Saturday, Makafui Woanyah indicated that Dr. Bawumia, who he described as a projective leader, would be compelled to work to convince Ghanaians to give him a second term.
He believes that Mr. Mahama, who according to the constitution can only govern for 4 years, would have nothing to lose and would therefore not be committed to any meaningful development.
“This is the only man that the NDC is afraid of. Bawumia is their nightmare. As for the former President, he has nothing to offer. The four years that he wants to come to rule this country, he wants to come and chop and go. He will not account to anybody after the four years. But Dr. Bawumia knows that he will seek a second term so he will work well and put the country on the right pedestal”, he said.
He was confident Dr. Bawumia would implement policies and projects that would contribute to putting Ghana at par with the developed world and enhance the livelihoods of the citizenry.
Mr. Woanyah blamed the deteriorated state of the economy under the watch of the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government on external factors but was quick to assert that the economy had been recovering and “there is some form of stability".
“As for economic issues, it is always up and down. I mean there is no way you are going to have that kind of stability throughout, because, we are not on an island. Even advanced economies are suffering due to global effects.
There is inflation everywhere. There are coup d'etats, people are chasing their governments, so it is a global thing, it is not only in Ghana. But for us in Ghana, we are grateful to God that things are bouncing back, and so the NDC will be disappointed. It is because of the external shocks, but we are overcoming those shocks and the economy is already improving” he said.
He indicated that Dr. Bawumia is a unifier, well composed, and a projective individual, and when elected as President would continue his digitization agenda which he has already laid a good foundation for.
Saturday’s primary
Mr. Woanyah lauded the conduct of delegates in the presidential primary - which was violent-free in his jurisdiction.
At the end of polls, 11 constituencies in the Volta Region voted in favor of second-placed Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, while the other 7 endorsed the candidature of the eventual winner, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The Member of Parliament for Assin Central polled 5,850 votes against 4,984 votes polled by the Vice President in that region.
