The flagbearer of the National Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has already set his sights on Olympic glory for Ghana at the next Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028.
Inspite of the nation's huge potentials in various sporting disciplines, Ghana has relatively under achieved at the Olympics, winning only 5 medals in history, and only one medal in the 4th Republic at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago.
To stem this tide and realise Ghana's huge sports potentials, Dr. Bawumia has announced comprehensive development plans by his future government, including sustainable funding, development programmes and an Olympics-specific programm.
Speaking at the launch of the NPP Manifesto in Takoradi on Sunday, Dr. Bawumia said his government will "start an “Operation Olympics Glory” programme by dedicating resources towards the preparation and readiness of athletes to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, USA."
As part of the Operation Olympics Glory Programme, Dr Bawumia revealed that, "where necessary" his government will target specific sports for medals.
As part of a broader sports development vision, Dr. Bawumia also announced the establishment of a Ghana School Sports Secretariat, as a special purpose vehicle to drive sustainable development of grassroot sports through the schools, in collobodation with stakeholders such as the Ghana Education Service and Sports federations.
