Ghana forward Bernard Tekpetey was subjected to racial abuse from sections of Levski Sofia supporters during and after Ludogorets Razgrad’s victory in the Bulgarian Super Cup at the Vasil Levski National Stadium.

The winger scored the decisive goal on Tuesday to secure the trophy for Ludogorets, but the celebrations were marred by disturbing incidents directed at the Ghana international.

In a strongly worded statement, Ludogorets condemned what it described as “unacceptable behaviour”, revealing that Tekpetey was targeted with monkey chants and racial insults from Levski fans during the match.

The club also raised concern over reports that children were among those involved in the abuse, describing it as a worrying reflection of the growing spread of discriminatory behaviour in Bulgarian football.

Matters escalated after the final whistle, with Tekpetey receiving death threats and racially offensive messages on his personal social media platforms.

Ludogorets confirmed that formal complaints have been lodged with the police and the prosecutor’s office over the threats against the player.

“Ludogorets will not stop fighting against racism,” the club said, noting that the incident follows a similar racist attack on former player Antoine Baroan last year.

The Bulgarian champions reiterated their full support for Tekpetey, stressing that he will not face the ordeal alone, while also calling for joint discussions among Bulgarian clubs to address recurring incidents of racism and protect the values of the game.
