BetPawa, an online gaming company, has announced plans to invest a minimum of GH¢7 million into the elite men's and women's football competitions in Ghana.
Ntoudi Mouyelo, managing director of Mchezo Limited, operators of betPawa, disclosed this at a press conference at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
The amount will be invested through the locker room bonus, a support package originally instituted to reward players in the Ghana Premier League, and now extended to cover the Women's F. A Cup.
In its debut season (2023/23), GH¢600,000 was paid to up to 4,000 players from 17 out of the 18 participating teams. Of the 18 Premier League clubs, only players of Asante Kotoko did not benefit following the club's decision not to be involved.
Last season, some 3,000 players received a total of GH¢1,300,000 from betPawa as a locker room bonus after the league partner increased the amount from GH¢150.00 to GH¢400.00.
For the current season, the bonus will be expanded to cover three members of each team's coaching or technical staff. For each match, teams will have the discretion to choose which members of the coaching staff to receive the bonuses.
''We expect to pay at least 3,500 players by the end of the season. That works up to GH¢1.4 million So within the next five seasons we expect to pay GH¢ 7 million across both the men's and women's divisions'' Ntoudi Mouyelo told reporters at the Alisa Hotel.
The locker room bonus was instituted as an incentive for Premier League players to win matches in the league. It is paid to all players on the match day list for matches they won.
