Two agents engaged by the Electoral Commission (EC) for biometric voter registration in Agona Sweduru have been remanded in prison custody for allegedly stealing registration equipment.
The two, Theophilus Addo Zuta, the headteacher of the Catholic Basic School ‘A’, and Richard Enyan, an hotelier, are alleged to have connived to keep the laptop and the webcam meant for the registration exercise at the headteacher's office after close of work on Sunday, April 1,2012.
However, luck eluded them when the headmaster's office was broken into and the equipments stolen.
The two were arraigned before the Agona Swedru Circuit Court and charged with two counts of conspiracy to steal and unlawful entry but their pleas were not taken.
They are to reappear on April 5, 2012. The facts of the case, as presented by the prosecutor, Inspector Alfred Boatey, to the court, presided over by Mr N.K.E. Osam, are that the two accused persons were, on April 1, 2012, engaged by the EC as registration officers at the Swedru Catholic Basic School ‘A’.
After close of work on that same day, Enyan was supposed to have kept the laptop and the webcam belonging to the government at his house or the district office of the EC or at the nearest police station.
However, he sought permission from Zuta to keep the items at the head teacher's office in the school.
According to the prosecutor, early in the morning of Monday, April 2, 2012 when the head teacher got to the school, he realised that his office had been broken into and the laptop containing all the records of registered voters and the webcam had been stolen.
The head teacher then made a report to the police, who arrested him and Enyan.
