Ghana’s female U-20, the Black Princesses, have received full payment of their African Games bonuses.
The Princesses won gold after beating bitter rivals, Nigeria, in the final of the football competition in Accra back in March.
Joy Sports sources have confirmed, each member of the team received the Ghana Cedi equivalent of $3,000.Â
The Sports Ministry announced during the African Games that gold medalists would receive $3,000, with $2,000 and $1,000 going to silver and bronze medalists respectively.
However, a day after their triumph, the Princesses were told that promise did not apply to team sports, and that the Ministry would settle on a package and revert.
The media outrage over that communique clearly had the desired impact, as the Sports Ministry have now paid the initial agreed amount of $3,000.
The Black Princesses are still owed winning bonuses for their qualification to the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
Yusif Basigi’s side was promised payment of those bonuses, which amounts to $6,000 for each member of the team, before the start of the African Games, but are still yet to be paid.
The team is set to begin camping for the World Cup, which begins in August, next month.
