Following Ghana’s 4-1 drubbing at the hands of the Dutch, a defiant Coach Rajevac promised two things: The Black Stars would be much improved in their second outing versus Latvia and his squad of 23 would be healthier and readier for their 2nd World Cup before heading out to South Africa.
The Stars obliged on both counts in an impressive outing against their Eastern European counter-parts.
A Quincy Owusu-Abeyie goal two minutes from the end claimed victory for Ghana and fittingly wrapped up what had been a dominant all- round display against the Latvians at the Stadium MK in Milton Keynes.
Coach Rajevac made 8 personnel changes to the team that lost to Holland on Tuesday, preferring to start with the spine of the side that excelled a few months ago in Angola.
This meant starts for the energetic Dede Ayew, Udinese’s Kwadwo Asamoah, in-form Asamoah Gyan, Prince Tagoe and a full debut for Portsmouth’s Kevin-Prince Boateng.
The new look Stars set about their task from the off, practically pinning the defensive Latvians to their half of the pitch.
The Stars found their men at will and with ease, fashioning out several good chances, the best being striker Asamoah Gyan’s pile-driver, which hit the underside of the cross bar and appeared to bounce behind the goal line, only to be ruled a no-goal by the assistant referee.
A two on one situation later in the half resulted in Kwadwo Asamoah wastefully blasting over, when Gyan was in a better position to score.
The second half followed the same pattern, despite wholesale changes to the team. The Stars made numerous incursions into their opponent’s half but failed to breakthrough.
AC Milan Striker Dominic Adiyah found the net but was correctly adjudged to be offside.
Al-Sadd foward Quincy Owusu Abeyie atoned for an earlier miss with his long range drive from the edge of the box in the 88th minute.
Coach Rajevac will have been pleased with the determined, high-tempo energetic performance put up by his charges, especially in the first half.
Viewers of Multi-TV’s big screen experience at selected venues across the country and on Joy Sports and Adom TV on Multi-TV, were of the general opinion that the more impressive performers on the day- Kwadwo Asamoah, Anthony Annan, Vorsah, Gyan, Dede and Tagoe- will be on the field of play at the start of Ghana’s World Cup match versus Serbia on 13th June in Loftus Versfeld Staduim, South Africa.
