Ghana’s Black Stars fell 2-0 to Japan in the 2025 Kirin Challenge Cup at the Toyota Stadium in Aichi.
The international friendly, which is part of preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saw coach Otto Addo make changes to the starting eleven with Joseph Anang making his debut in goal while Antoine Semenyo named captain for the first time.
Anang made an early stop in the 5th minute to deny a feeble Japanese effort, keeping Ghana in the game.
But he could not do more to avoid the breakthrough in the 16th minute after Semenyo lost possession in midfield, allowing Japan to exploit the space.
Former Liverpool midfielder and the hosts captain, Takumi Minamino received a precise pass and calmly finished past Anang.
Ghana responded with attempts on goal, including a volley from Brandon Thomas-Asante that was deflected for a corner and a shot from Derrick Kohn that went wide.
Kohn also produced a brilliant block to prevent a second for Japan, but around the hour mark, Ritsu Doan slotted home a near-post finish to double the lead.
The match was further marred by a serious injury to midfielder Abu Francis while attempting a tackle in early part of the second half.
Japan had several chances to extend their lead but failed to convert.
The Black Stars now shift focus to their next friendly against South Korea on November 18.
