Some angry youth went on a shooting spree over a chieftaincy dispute at Adoagyiri, near Nsawam in the Akuapem South district of the Eastern region, last Sunday, November 18, 2007, hitting and almost killing two persons.
The Eastern Region police are also burdened with yet another wee-smoking murderer who has attacked two traders in the Kwahu area with a cutlass and clubs.
The Adoagyiri victims were Sandra Animwaa, a 20-year-old hairdresser who is still on admission at the Nsawam Government Hospital, and Ali Yaminu, 25, who has been discharged.
Speaking to The Heritage, the Nsawam district police commander, Supt. Daniel Nyampong, stated that the former chief of Adoagyiri, Nana Adu Kokoo II died in January this year and was buried on November 17, after which the two royal gates at Adoagyiri: Afra and Ohenewaa, began scheming to succeed him.
Before the burial, the Afra gate filed a case against the Ohenewaa gate before the Akyem Kotoku Traditional Council that the latter could not organise the funeral and go ahead to nominate a new chief.
Judgement was entered in favour of the Afra gate and it was, therefore, authorised to organise the funeral and nominate a new chief. The Ohenewaa gate was saddened by the turn of events and so attempted to prevent the Afra gate from organising the funeral.
The funeral, however, went ahead with a man being installed chief with the stool name Nana Dompreh II, according to the police source.
On Sunday, November 18, this year, the family held a meeting in the evening and one of them, Abakomahene Asumaning Gyekye, 64, was going home when some youth attacked and inflicted cutlass wounds on him.
A good Samaritan, who went to his aid, had his vehicle windscreen smashed by the angry youth but he managed to send the old man to the Nsawam Government Hospital.
According to the police commander, the youth then began shooting indiscriminately. In the course of the shooting, Animwaa and Yaminu were hit by bullets. It took police re-enforcement from Koforidua in the New Juaben municipality and Kyebi in the East Akyem district to bring the situation under control.
Supt. Nyampong added that the new chief, Nana Dompreh, and three of his elders: Abusuapanin Kwadwo Ampem, Kwaku Boateng and George Agyeman were arrested together with two youth, Owusu Appiah and Kwame Bortey, to assist in investigations.
At the time of filing this report, the chief and his elders had been granted police enquiry bail but the two youth were still in custody, while the police continued to guard the town to protect lives and property.
In another development, two days after the brutal murder of Police Lance Corporal Hamid Sumaila at the Kwahu Praso Police Station by a wee smoker, another suspected wee smoker, George Kwadwo Nyamekye, 28, unemployed, has attacked and badly injured two traders at Jejeti in the Kwahu West district of the Eastern region with a cutlass and stick.
The victims, Mohammed Salifu, 25, and Moro Adamu, 24, were rushed to the Enyiresi Government Hospital where they have since been in critical condition.
The Sanaahene of Jejeti, Nana Kwabena Somuah, told The Heritage that the victims, who dealt in clothing, had rented a room at Jejeti. The house they lodged in happened to belong to the grandfather of Nyamekye, who (Nyamekye) was notorious in the town because of his habitual wee smoking.
In the morning of Monday, November 19, 2007, Nyamekye allegedly went to the house and asked the tenants to vacate the premises since he wanted to use it for other purposes. Salifu was said to have told Nyamekye that he (Salifu) was not the one who rented the room and, therefore, could not surrender the keys to him.
Not satisfied with Salifu's answer, Nyamekye allegedly returned to the house in the evening to pour human and animal excreta on their clothing materials, meant for sale, in the room.
When Salifu confronted him over his action, Nyamekye allegedly used the cutlass he was holding to slash his hand and further hit his neck with a stick. He then rushed out from the house to escape but Adamu chased him.
Nyamekye again slashed Adamu's hand with the cutlass and hit his head with the stick before he was able to escape into the bush.
The assailant was, however, arrested by a search party Tuesday and handed over to the Nkawkaw police. The police confirmed the story and said investigations were on going.
Meanwhile, L/Cpl Hamid Somaila who was last Saturday butchered to death by the 32-year-old wee smoking farmer, Kwadwo Attah, at the Kwahu Praso police station, was buried on Monday.
