The Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) has arrested David Philip McDermott who is among Britain's top 10 most wanted fugitives.
His arrest was occasioned by a request from the British Authorities to their Ghanaian counterparts.
Joy News’ Kofi Siaw Larbi reports that BNI arrested the fugitive who is wanted by British Authorities to stand trial for drug offences on Friday in Accra.
McDermott, 42, with a plot to import 400 kilos of cocaine into the United Kingdom was captured this morning in a house at the Burma Hills area in Accra.
According to a Telegraph report of Friday, March 11, McDermott is on the National Crime Agency (NCA)’s list of 10 of Britain's most wanted fugitives who are believed to be on the run.
Confirming the arrest, the British High Commissioner to Ghana, Jon Benjamin, tweeting with the handle @johnbenjamin19, tweeted, "I am very grateful to the BNI for their excellent collaboration today in the arrest of a wanted British fugitive>..."
Commissioner Benjamin added the link to the NCA's article about the arrest.
McDermott is suspected of being a member of a Liverpool-based organised crime group involved in a conspiracy to import and supply cocaine, which was seized from a container of frozen Argentinian beef in May 2013 at Tilbury Docks. He is also wanted for conspiracy to blackmail.
He is reported to have married a Ghanaian lady and the two have been living together in Accra for over a year now.
McDermott’s arrest means 76 out of the 86 fugitives on the Captura list have now been caught.
Head of the NCA’s International Crime Bureau, Dave Allen said, “This arrest is a result of close working with the Ghanaian authorities, and shows our determination and success in tracking down fugitives, however far they run in an attempt to evade capture.
Allen added, “McDermott was the last man outstanding in a plot to smuggle a huge quantity of cocaine which would have ended up on the streets of Merseyside. He will now be returned to the UK to stand trial.”
McDermott faces extradition in the coming days.
