Many Ghanaians have over the years had cause to criticize the BNI for its blatant abuse of power and disregard for the rule of law. The most recent actions of the BNI have reignited calls for the organization to be checked or perhaps scrapped.
Has the BNI become an outlaw organization in spite of the role it plays in ensuring Ghana’s security? Is the BNI a necessary evil?
A routine item on the condemnation menu of Ghanaians, the BNI is up to scrutiny in the latest edition of Joy FM’s intellectual platform, Thought Leadership.
The Motion: ‘THE BNI IS AN OUTLAW ORGANIZATION AND SHOULD BE SCRAPPED’.
Speaking ‘For’ the motion is Capt Rtd Nkrabea Effah Darteh (a former Deputy Interior Minister and a private legal practitioner) and Mr. Hassan Tampuli (a private legal practitioner).
Speaking ‘Against’ the motion is Dr. Kwesi Aning (Head of the Department of Research at the Kofi Annan Peace Keeping Training Centre) and Mr. Osei Bonsu Dickson, private legal practitioner and lecturer at Wisconsin University College.
Lead Coordinator of Joy Fm Thought Leadership Nicholas Opoku, told myjoyonline.com that response of the public on the actions on the BNI has been overwhelming.
According to him, the debate is simply the opening of a dam of public opinion on the controversial subject matter.
“It promises to be intellectually stimulating and rigorous”, he said.
“It presents us with a unique opening to offer the public as well as policy makers the benefit of expert opinion."
